1   Introduction 

1.1   Research Background 
News  report  is  considered  as  an  objective  and  impartial  way  to  convey  information  to readers.  Mass  media  is  the  most  convenient  and  efficient  tool  for  people  to  get  the  latest information in different fields. Therefore, people’s attitudes and opinions are easily influenced by  the  media  which  is  controlled  by  powerful  groups  since  few  of  people  have  time  and energy to research whether the news report is real and objective or not. Linguists regard news report as a very typical social practice, which  is  formed  in  typical  background  of  economy, politics,  religion,  socio-culture.  The  reporters  live  in  certain  socio-cultural  environment  and represent the interest of ruling class so it is impossible for them to report a new objectively and neutrally since their ideologies are strongly affected by certain social conditions.  Xinjiang violent or terrorist incidents are these events that happened in Xinjiang in recent years, such as the terrorist incident of Xinjiang’s Bachu, the riot of Urumqi on July 5, 2009. Most of the participants of these events are minority people with low income who dissatisfy with society and government because of poor life, or are Xinjiang independence activists who want  to  isolate  Xinjiang  from  China  and  stubbornly  think  Han  invaded  Xinjiang.  What’s worse, overseas terrorist organization prefers stirring up troubles, so Xinjiang’s people often launch terrorist actions. As soon as violence occurred in China especially in Xinjiang region, it would have a large number of reports on Chinese and Western media. Moreover, Chinese and Western media will have different interpretation and evaluation about these events due to different  ideologies.  Urumqi’s  explosions  happened  in  the  capital  of  the  Xinjiang  Uygur Autonomous Region of China, at 7:50 am on May 22, which made 39 innocent citizens killed and 94 injured. The Chinese and Western mass media pay more attention to this incident and carry on frequent and detailed report on it. The data analysis of this event is selected from the mainstream  mass  media  of  China  and  Western  countries,  including  China  Daily,  People’s Daily, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and Times and the date of these reports arrange from May 22 to May 24. Most of the studies about Critical Discourse Analysis focus on lexical classification, modality, transitivity, and nominalization. However,  few  people  make  a  comparative  analysis  of  reported  speech  when  they  analyze news reports. Therefore, the author would make a contrastive study on these news discourses about the violence happened in Urumqi through analyzing reported speech.
