Cormac McCarthy is not a prolific writer.So far,he has written ten novels and fourplays.Moreover,his main achievement lies in his novel creation.McCarthy is a writerwith a very distinctive style,and his work can be divided into three broad categories:Southern Gothic novels,Western novels and post-apocalyptic novels.

From the 1960s to the end of the 1970s,McCarthy published four southern novels,which did not attract much attention because of the extremely abstract plot,strongvernacular and obscure theme.After that,McCarthy begins writing Western novels.McCarthy forges the border trilogy with a decade of work,which depicts the killing andbrutality on the Mexican border.The civilized world is destroyed in his works,and thereaders are shocked by the blood and violence.For McCarthy,the hidden element ofviolence in humanity is unavoidable,so he portrays the greed and cruelty of humannature so profoundly in his work.

In The Road,McCarthy still retains his previous writing style.In the novel,humanbeings come back to the most uncivilized state of existence.Because of the limitedresources,people do everything they can to grab them,which exposes the dark side ofhuman nature.However,The Road is different from his previous works.The characteristics of violence in The Road are not as apparent as before.At the same time,the eternal theme of the novel is no longer violence and killing but kindness and hope.Many critics believe that The Road is the most successful work written by McCarthy.This novel is so highly praised because it reflects ecological worries of McCarthy.

1.2 Research objectives and significance

At present,mankind has entered a new era of history named the Anthropocene.Onthe one hand,mankind has become a geological force affecting the earth.On the otherhand,it shows that uncontrolled human activities may produce injury to mankind itself.With the spread of the concept of Anthropocene from geology to literature,theAnthropocene novels came into being.

The Road is a typical Anthropocene novel.The world in The Road is destroyed byan unknown catastrophe,and the harm it brings has lasted for several years.Humansociety has regressed to the most primitive state in such a harsh environment.McCarthycreates such a world not to show the immense devastation of the disaster,but to show hisecological worries and his thoughts on the future of mankind.

Based on the above statements,several research questions are put forward:Firstly,how does the novel describe the doomsday world caused by the Anthropocene?Secondly,what are the effects of the doomsday world on mankind?Thirdly,what enlightenmenthas the ecological thought embodied in The Road brought to people in the Anthropoceneera?
