5.1 Major findings

The Road is different from McCarthy’s previous works.In this novel,McCarthy nolonger limits his perspective to the United States,but looks at the whole world and turnspeople’s attention to the collective consequences in the future.This thesis analyses TheRoad according to Timothy Clark’s Anthropocene theory.The main findings from theanalysis of setting descriptions,character dialogues,and hidden details are as follows:

First of all,McCarthy shows people a broken world in an extreme way,forcingpeople to face the terrible consequences of allowing the development of theAnthropocene.The world before the disaster in the novel is no different from the realworld,making the world after the disaster more real and terrible.Both the death of natureand the collapse of human civilization can make people realize the gravity of theecological problems caused by the arrival of the Anthropocene.The descriptions ofpoison flooding,climate change,and decreased species diversity in the novel are allderived from reality.But these changes are often ignored because of their invisibility andspace-time dislocation of the results.McCarthy turns the reader’s attention to theintangible impact of out-of-control human activities.The arrival of the doomsday in thenovel indicates that human influence on the earth has exceeded its critical value andshows the subversion of Anthropocentrism.
