texts, advertising texts, news texts, etc. There are not many examples of interpersonal meaning analysis of literary texts. Therefore, the study attempts to link Systemic Functional Linguistic theory to this particular discourse to examine the interpersonal meaning of ACs, exploring how interpersonal meaning is achieved, revealing the characters’ attitudes, and inferring their personality traits. Thirdly, it appreciates and understands the plot and characters in the text from a new perspective, helping readers to interpret more thoroughly the character traits, psychological activities, and relationships between characters in the text and enriching the study of Alcott’s works in English translation as well as the in-depth study of his novels.

2.1 Overview of Adverbial Conjunctions

It is necessary to provide a detailed description of adverbial conjunctions before discussing earlier research. Their definition and classification must therefore be addressed.

2.1.1 Definition of Adverbial Conjunctions

Adverbial conjunctions, or ACs, serve as both a connective and a modifying element to link clauses, penalties, and paragraphs and suggest numerous semantic connections. Adverbial conjunctions are characterised by their connective function to form a specific category. Therefore, they cannot be classified similarly to adjectives, prepositions, nouns, or conjunctions. (Yuan Surong, 2013: 22). These words are more likely to be conjunctions than adverbs and exist only in the “transitional zones” between adverbs and conjunctions. A simple illustration of the definition of ACs is provided in the diagram below.

2.2 Previous Studies of Louisa May Alcott’s Works at Home and Abroad

Known for her classic children’s books, Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women (1868–69). As a result of pressing family needs, she wrote the autobiographical novel Little Women (1868–69). In Little Women, Louisa May Alcott describes the domestic adventures of a modest New England family with a positive outlook. The book talks about the different personalities of four sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March) and their families during their transition from childhood to adulthood and as they confront the pressure of the workforce, society, and marriage. Then she followed Little Women’s success with two sequels, Little Men (1871) and Jo’s Boys (1886). In 1888, Harriet Prescott Spofford could refer to Alcott as “the writer better loved by the children of America than Shakespeare himself.” According to The Library of Congress, Little Women belongs among “Books That Shaped America.” Alcott longed to write a novel that would make her an acknowledged author, and thanks to Little Women, she achieved this goal. Ever since the novel was published, it became the subject of discussion, and more than fifty translations earned Alcott fame and wealth worldwide.

However, the novel has not escaped criticism. Janice Alberghene and Beverly Clark (2014: 14) hold that “the association of Alcott with children sometimes causes her to be dismissed”. Her novel is criticized for its lack of writing techniques and didactic tone by some literary critics.
