t Shakespeare is one ofthe greatest literary psychologists who attaches great importance to characters’mentalactivity and has an intimate understanding of human emotions.He creates all sorts ofcharacters in his drama world and all of them inevitably face with different problems intheir life.Meanwhile,these problems accordingly result in violent fluctuations in theirpsychology.With regard to Othello,Shakespeare adds more subtle details to the hero’spsychological change who experiences a huge transformation from a noble Moor to asavage Moor,walking from civilization to barbarism.Employing Freud’s psychic zonetheory,this thesis explores Othello’s anxiety situations and provides an insight into hisinner world.

By analyzing Othello’s id,ego,superego and his inner conflicts,it can be seen thatOthello’s plight of anxiety is principally due to his unsound personality structure,whichalso leads to his tragedy.Additionally,the conflicts among his id,ego and superegonearly exist in every stage of his life,which manifest in the powerful forces of the id,the weakness of the ego and the superego.After arriving at Cyprus,Othello suffersserious inner conflicts about his identity triggering by his suspicion of Desdemona’sfaithfulness.His personality flaws also gradually appear.Unable to deal withpersonality conflicts effectively,Othello’s psyche is split.Finally,Othello carries outruthless behavior of killing his wife and commits suicide out of desperation.
