y problems about self-translation were discussed, for example, how areidentity and the self manifested in self-translation? As a special activity of translation, it isnecessary to figure out its features, and give it a proper role in translation studies.Recent decades, self-translation of Chinese bilingual writers has also attractedscholars' attention. Some achievements have been gained in this field. Nonetheless, a fewself-translators have appeared in China, such as Bai Xianyong, Lin Yutang, Zhang Ailing,Xiao Qian, as well as several writers who are of Chinese origins, like Maxine HongKingston. To be honest, these self-translators appearing in China are quite different fromtheir foreign counterparts for self-translating is not a regular performance. That is to say,the self-translated works by these Chinese authors do not take an important part of theiroeuvres.Lin Yutang (1895-1976), one of these bilingual writers, is a famous writer, philologist, philosopher, translator and cultural ambassador. He was born in Fujian Province, but hisfather managed to send him to church schools. The education he received in churchschools and the further study abroad equipped him with excellent command of English aswell as literature of both Chinese and English. During his lifetime, he devoted himself toEnglish writing and translation, made great contributions to the cultural communicationbetween China and the West. Moreover, proficiency in both languages and familarity withboth cultures provide preconditions and possibilities for his accomplishment inself-translation. Lin Yutang has finished sixty books of which forty were written inEnglish. In 1935, Lin finished My Country and My People (Lin Yutang, 1935), whichmade him a shining star in America. Within four months, the book was published seventimes. Because of its success and an invitation from Pearl S. Buck, Lin Yutang went toNew York in 1936. His second book in English, The Importance of Living (Lin Yutang,1937) was published in 1937 which became the best-seller in America in the followingyear. This book was translated into many languages including Chinese, German, Italian,Portuguese, and Dutch. It is this book that secured him the position of a leading envoy ofChina to the West. In 1939, Moment in Peking (Lin Yutang, 1939) was finished andpublished. It was so excellent that Lin Yutang was nominated for the Nobel Prize forLiterature in both 1972 and 1973. As a matter of fact, Lin Yutang wrote many English
essays which were published in various periodicals and newspapers during his early years, and he rendered them into Chinese later, which is called self-translation. According toWang Zhenren and Gao Jian (1995), Lin Yutang's Chinese version always published insuccession in America one or two years after those English versions appeared. His skillfulcomposition in two languages is a very good source of inspirations for us. Zhao Yiheng(2000) maintains that Lin Yutang's Chinese writing is so excellent that it could not betranslated into English while his English writing is also too elegant to be translated. However, due to political and historical reasons, the study of Lin Yutang's works has longbeen neglected. Until recent decades, many studies have been conducted on his writingand conventional translation, but only a few scholars have noticed his self-translations.
