introduction of the rewriting theory, the author applies it tothe case of Jinsuoji and analyzes Jinsuoji and its translated version in the grandbackground of ideology, poetics and patronage Then the author centers the attentionupon the specific demonstrations of individual ideology and poetics on the part ofEileen Chang through illustrations of her translation approaches and comparisonsbetween the source text and the target text. To conclude, this thesis goes from themacro level to the micro level and from general illustrations to specific analyses, trying to find out the major factors influencing Eileen Chang’s translation practicefrom the aspects of ideology, poetics and patronage.Concretely speaking, this thesis consists of four chapters, besides the introductionand the conclusion. The first chapter is a
literature review, stating the researchsituations of self-translation as well as Eileen Chang’s self-translations. Then it goeson to relate the studies on rewriting theories both in China and in the West. Thischapter serves as a bird’s-eye view of the previous research on this issue and alsoprovides a brief review of the present study. Chapter two introduces the theoreticalbases of the present study. It first introduces the related theoretical school—themanipulation school, and then relates Lefevere’s rewriting theory and its threeconstraints in detail. The third and fourth chapter are the main body of this paper—acase study of The Golden Cangue from the perspective of rewriting theory. In chapterthree, after a brief review of Eileen Chang, Jinsuoji and The Golden Cangue, theauthor probes into the three constraints—ideology, poetics and patronage—in detailsin the case of the translation of Jinsuoji. It discusses the constraints mainly from twoaspects, including external and internal factors, trying to give a panoramic picture ofthe translating of Jinsuoji. Then comes the fourth chapter, which is the core part ofthis thesis. The basic translation
strategy under the three constraints is summarized asforeignization, where the author gives exact examples to show the basic skills ofaddition, omission and adaptation. Then the author explores the relationship betweenwriting and translation of the writer-cum-translator on the translation of Jinsuoji, trying to reveal that there’s an inherent constituency between the original work andthe translated version in terms of individual ideology and poetics. As the translator ofher own work, she knows better than anyone else the style, characters, implicationsand motif of the original. She is able to reduplicate what she demonstratesconsciously or unconsciously in her original work in the translated version. Toillustrate this point the present thesis lists some prominent characteristics both inJinsuoji and The Golden Cangue. In this sense, no matter the self-translator realizes itor not, he or she actually behaves under the manipulation of her own ideology andpoetics.
