摘要:A Rose for Emily, Faulkner pursues an artistic writing style which is connected closely with the realistic world. He brings the questions to readers not only through the simple fact but his complex form, which always make readers immersed with his thought.
among Faulkner’s best novels for his “Yaknapatawhpa Kingdom”, and that one because of its macabre nature and elements of mastery and suspense, has enjoyed a long-lived popular appeal.
1.2 The Story of A Rose for Emily
The story is set in the town of Jefferson in Yoknapatawpha County, the center of Faulkner’s “mythical Kingdom”. Emily Grierson, a descendant of the noble Grierson family, is the central character of the short story. An unnamed narrator details the strange circumstances of Emily’s life and her odd relationships with her father, who controls and manipulates her, and her lover, the Yankee road worker Homer Barron. Dominated by the father who has the rigid ideas of social status, the daughter has been prevented from marrying her town fellows during his lifetime, and therefore after his death, she is left alone and penniless. Later, she falls in love with a Yankee, Homer Barron, which is disregarded by the whole town and her relatives. As a member of the stubborn Grieson’s family, Emily arrogantly defies her kin and the community by insisting on marrying Homer. Unfortunately, Miss Emily finds that Homer has no intention to marry her. When Homer Barron threatens to leave her, she is seen buying arsenic, with which the townspeople believe she will commit suicide. However, she does not kill herself but her lover – Homer Barron. Since then, Emily isolates herself from the outside world and lives lonely in her house. And she is nearly forgotten by townspeople of Jefferson before her death. On her funeral, they find the corpse of Homer Barron lays in the bed of her upstairs room which she hides all days, and also a long strand of iron-gray hair on the second pillow in the bed.
The fact that Emily Grieson, an aging Southern Belle, murders the lover and sleeps beside his skeleton for 40 years is the most sensational aspect of the story. On the face of it, it is Emily’s love story, but actually it implies the strong conflict between the north and the south. The story’s complexities on narration has been inspired criticized by some critics, while casual readers find the work as one of Faulkner’s most acceptable (and shortest) works. The popularity of the story was also due in no small part to its gruesome ending.
Faulkner practices his peculiar features to discover a deep theme in the story. This novel demonstrates some of Faulkner’s artistic predilections: the exploration of the social structure and customs of a Southern community, the feelings of loneliness and rootless of the southern descendants, and the uncontrollable devastation of the South tradition.
II. Symbolism in A Rose for Emily
The short story A Rose for Emily draws a vivid picture of the southern Jefferson of the United States. Though the plot is not complicated, yet it can be regarded as a panorama of Faulkner’s works. It attracts readers’ attention successfully and makes us immersed in the whole story. And the ingenious usage of symbolism is a distinctive feature, which makes the story fill with profound implications.
2.1 The Grierson House
Faulkner does not talk too much about the inside of the house, whose “front door remained closed”, just as everyone in Jefferson does not know much about Emily. Miss Emily is compared to her house in many different ways. Firstly, the descriptions of the decaying house symbolize Mis
