关键词:《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰》写作风格分析William Faulkner’s Writing StyleA Rose for Emily美国文学

摘要:A Rose for Emily, Faulkner pursues an artistic writing style which is connected closely with the realistic world. He brings the questions to readers not only through the simple fact but his complex form, which always make readers immersed with his thought.

s Emily’s physical and emotional decay, as well as her mental problems; secondly, when comparing the Grierson house with Emily Grieson, the house is used to symbolize Emily’s shift in social status and her reluctance to accept change.
“…once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies…”.(杨立民,2006:103)From the description, we can see that at first the house is not only built for function, but also to impress and engage the intention of the town’s people. Similarly, Emily Grieson is dressed in a conspicuous way. This is mostly because her appearance is perceived as a direct reflection of her family. Emily’s significance to his father is strongly ornamental and only a property, just as the overly lavish home is. However, as the plot progresses, the house is described as “smelling of dust and disuse”. Ultimately, when Emily dies, the house is seen as an “eyesore among eyesore”. And Emily is regarded as “a fallen monument”. Both of them lose their formal splendor.
Besides symbolizing her physical characteristics, it is also a symbol of her change in social status. In its prime, the house is “big” and “squarish” and locates on Jefferson’s “most selected street”. The owners are also considered to be strong and powerful. And Emily, as the last living Grierson, comes to symbolize her family’s gorgeous past, and possibly even the entire south’s luxurious history. Her father’s death and her scandalous appearance with Homer Barron lessen her reputation in the public eyes. And inevitably, Emily died in the house filled with dust and shadows.
It is also used to symbolize Emily Grierson’s unwillingness to accept change. She holds tightly to her family’s affluent past. When the new mayor asks her to pay taxes, she is deaf to his request and asks him to consult the Colonel Satoris who has been dead for ten years. The house is described to be stubborn and unrelenting, as Miss Emily is also portrayed on many occasions. When she gets free postal delivery, she refuses to let them fasten the mental numbers above her door and attach a mailbox to the house. She refuses to be associated with anything modernistic, which reflectes her stubbornness. Even when she is left “alone, a pauper,” and “humanized,” she absolutely refuses to be viewed with pity. In fact she “demanded more than ever the recognition of her dignity as the last Grieson”. Likewise, the house is presented as “Lifting its stubborn and Coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and gasoline pumps”. Just like the house, Emily considers herself superior to the rest of the town.
 2.2 Miss Emily
Just as the house seems to reject progress and update, so does Miss Emily, until both of them become decaying symbols of their dying generation. In this story, Emily is not only an individual but also a representative of the traditional south and its values. “Alive, Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care”. (杨立民,2006:103) When she died, she was “a fallen monument”. Her southern heritage and points of view are represented through her actions. Her stubbornness and unrelenting attitude are very strong characteristics of the Southern heritage. She refuses to believe that the time is changing and refuses to change into the new society. The Southern heritage is also represented through Miss Emily’s strict and repetitive ways. The story basically addresses the changes in th论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
