关键词:《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰》写作风格分析William Faulkner’s Writing StyleA Rose for Emily美国文学
摘要:A Rose for Emily, Faulkner pursues an artistic writing style which is connected closely with the realistic world. He brings the questions to readers not only through the simple fact but his complex form, which always make readers immersed with his thought.
and gasoline pumps. And Homer’s construction company coming to town according to the contracts further implies the historical fact that the north expanded its force to the south after winning the civil war. However, since Homer is not a man who is responsible for every woman, Emily and Homer couldn’t be unified forever. Emily kills Homer and sleeps with his corpse for many years. And the south has to struggle to resist to the progressive and materialistic civilization of the north. But undoubtedly, the industrial north which Homer Barron represents will win, which is the historical trend. The old south could not keep itself from declining and disintegrating.
Homer Barron is a typical character who carries the kind of Bourgeois moral values. He seeks for private interest and lacks in moral disciplines; he indulges in wine and women but refuses to bear any moral responsibilities. He is not serious about love. He just flirts. With Miss Emily—a representative of the old moral values, Homer’s moral values form a sharp contrast of hers. They can’t be together. The only way of solving the conflict is using violence. It is inevitable and also the result of moral conflicting. But Faulkner wants to remind the readers, while the human-beings are discarding those old, out-of-date things and adopting the more ruthless and ambitious ways of the industrialization and mechanization. How can we retain the fine qualities, preserve the splendid culture, and establish friendly relations with Nature? This is what every human-being should think over.
2.4 Rose
The title of the story is A Rose for Emily, but we cannot find rose as a noun in the story. Nor anybody presents any rose for her. In fact, “A Rose for Emily”, the title can reflect what Faulkner thinks of her. It shows that Faulkner holds a positive attitude towards her, although her behaviors are to some extent grotesque and abnormal. However, she is only a victim of her family and the whole society. The sharp conflict between the two different types of social ideologies—capitalism and slavery, is the root of Emily’s tragedy. Emily is a strong-willed woman. She possesses something peculiar to aristocrat in her character, but it seems to be lost in contemporary days though people still show respect for her.
The title shows that Emily is worthy of a memory of a rose. She is deserved to get a rose from the readers. Though we can not find “rose” as a noun, it appears twice as an adjective in the last section, “…upon the valance curtains of faded rose color, upon the rose-shaded lights…” (杨立民,2006:110) which also conveys a sense of respect. That is why Emily’s funeral is very solemn. “When Miss Emily died, our whole town went to her funeral”. They have regarded her as a part of their own glorious history. Therefore, though no one has seen the room in 40 years, it seems that she has the right of seclusion until her death.
Rose is also a symbol of love. From the title, we can clearly see that Emily’s tragedy is also a love tragedy. Though the way Emily tries her best to conquer time is very grotesque, we can deeply understand what she has done. Her bold spirit of pursuing love wins admiration from the public after her death (it is a great pity that Homer makes her deeply disappointed). So A Rose for Emily is a kind of compensation and a sort of grief. As a southern writer, Faulkner regards Emily as a southern traditional representative of Ameri
