e the sense of innocence that they possessed at the beginning of the novel. The painted savages who have hunted, tortured, and killed animals and human beings are a far cry from the guileless children swimming in the lagoon at the beginning of the novel. But Golding does not portray this loss of innocence as something that is done to the children; rather, it results naturally from their increasing openness to the innate evil and savagery that has always existed within them. Golding implies that civilization can mitigate but never wipe out the innate evil that exists within all human beings. The forest glade in which Simon sits symbolizes this loss of innocence. At first, it is a place of natural beauty and peace, but when Simon returns later in the novel, he discovers the bloody sow’s head impaled upon a stake in the middle of the clearing. The bloody offering to the beast has disrupted the paradise that existed before—a powerful symbol of innate human evil disrupting childhood innocence.

 

IV. The Conflict Between the Instinct of Civilization and the  Savagery
 
The dualism of human nature includes the instinct of civilization and the instinct of savagery, which exist within all human’s heart. Different conditions stimulate different humanities to play their roles; civilization is the outcome of social obligation while the savagery is the most primitive nature. In an extreme environment people will become violent and evil, the instinct of savagery will replace the instinct of civilization. this spontaneous and self-centered desire facilitates people to do things that go against moral.
 
The conflict between the two instincts is the driving force of Lord of the Flies, Golding portrays the rise and swift fall of an isolated, makeshift civilization, which is torn to pieces by the savage instincts of those who comprise it. The conflict between civilization and savagery is represented most directly by the novel’s two main characters: Ralph, the protagonist, represents order and leadership, while Jack, the antagonist, represents savagery and the desire for power. While Ralph uses his authority to establish rules, protect the good of the group, and enforce the moral and ethical codes of the English society the boys were raised in, Jack is interested in gaining power over the other boys to gratify his most primal impulses, and the whole novel is the process of loss of innocence of those English boys. Golding uses this process to prove how weak the civilization is. Generally, the novel portrays the instinct of savagery far more primal and fundamental to human psyche than the instinct of civilization. Moral behaviors are often merely an imposition of civilization, rather than a natural expression of human individuality. When left to their own devices, the novel seems to argue, people will become cruel, wild, and barbaric. Lord of the Flies commands an outlook that seems to show that the instinct of savagery is the fundamental instinct of human nature, and man is inherently tied to society, and without it, man would likely return to savagery.
