Figure 6 The Impact of Guo Meimei event on the number of public charitable donations (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, 2016)
Guo Meimei event and the follow-up exposure of the existence of corruption, unreasonable procedures of applying for donation, unprofessional management in the Red Cross caused the Chinese public’s strong concern for charity and the Red Cross. Before Guo Meimei event, if the Government called on people to donate for charity, it will be responded by the majority of the public, after Guo Meimei event, if the Government issued a charity call again, the public reaction was indifference, ridicule and anger, many people were not willing to make any contribution to the Red Cross. Data showed that in 2010 the Red Cross received donated money of about $ 1 billion, after the outbreak of Guo Meimei event, what the Red Cross received in 2011 was only about $ 400 million, there was a direct reduction of 60%. Since the outbreak of Guo Meimei event, what the Chinese Red Cross received was not significantly increased. From 2011 to 2015, even if the overall number of charitable donations in China increased by 20%, but what the Red Cross received did not increase, indicating that the public in China would rather donate money to other charitable organizations and did not want to donate to the Red Cross, indicating that what Guo Meimei event impacted the public trust in the Red Cross was serious and lasting. Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (2016) also confirmed the correctness of the above judgments, the data showed that before Guo Meimei event, 73% of the respondents trusted the Red Cross, only 7% of the public who did not trust the Red Cross, and after Guo Meimei event, there was no public who trusted the Red Cross, and 80% of the public chose not to trust the Red Cross.
(1. Donating to victims in person; 2.Charitable organizations of civil society 3.Unwilling to contribute; 4. Charitable organizations with foreign background; 5. Others)
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (2016), Long and Yang (2016) also pointed out that after Guo Meimei event, 54% of respondents said that they would like to personally donate to the victims, 40% of respondents said that they were willing to donate to other private charitable organizations, 26.7% of the respondents believed that they would not want to donate, 20% of them would like to donate to those charitable organizations with foreign background; 34% of respondents would take other donation ways. Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (2016), Long and Yang (2016) have shown that Guo Meimei event has traumatized public trust in the Red Cross, which to a certain extent hurt the enthusiasm of the public participate in charity. This may be a more tragic thing.
