4.2.5 Long term investments

From table 4.11 and Figure 4.8, 95% of the respondents responded that the main products that the SACCO provided to their members were loans and advances whereas the remaining 5% mentioned other minor services that the members receive from the SACCOs which included benevolent funds. There is there for need to diversify the products that the SACCOs provide for their members so as to encourage their contributions and participation in the SACCOs.

All the respondents (100%) indicated that their SACCOs had long term investments and that the long term investments affected the performance of the SACCO. They suggested that the members should be encouraged to save more so as to accumulate funds for longer term investments. 100% of the respondents strongly disagreed with the statement that the SACCO invest in buildings or loans, but rather indicated that the money can be invested in shares at the stock exchange.

4.2.6 Nature of business

Table 4.12 indicates that majority of the members ( 75%) of the SACCOs that were the scope of the study indicated that they had a check-off system and were staff of the SACCOs. 25% of the respondents were business people who include retailers, wholesalers and farmers. They also indicated that they had no check-off system, which should help them ensure that there were timely and constant contributions to the SACCO by the members. Check-off systems therefore enhanced regular savings which provide a sound base for the SACCO and for the members as they take up loans and advances from the SACCOs.

100% of the respondents also indicated that the check-off system(Its absence or presence) affected the contributions and essentially performance of the SACCO. No much time is needed to collect the contributions from the members who are scattered. They however indicated that, in the absence of the check-off system, the SACCO should encourage their members to bring their monthly contributions to the SACCO head office which proves too difficult and cumbersome considering the nature of business that the members of the SACCOs do without regular income. Thus there is need to encourage members to save regardless of their income flow.

5.1 Summary of findings

This chapter confirms the stated objectives. It gives the strength of each factor and the perception of each respondent. The chapter therefore tries to summarize, conclude and recommend on the basis of the result of data analysis.
