　　1.3 The Layout and Main Content of the Thesis论文的主要内容
　　This thesis includes six chapters. In Chapter 1,a brief introduction is given about thewhole thesis, including research background, significance, the layout and content of thethesis. In Chapter 2, Eugene·Nida is introduced with his Functional Equivalence theoryincluding the development and basic principles of the theory of Functional Equivalence andits implication in both Western countries and China. In Chapter 3, fundamentals of Englishnews are explored in terms of definition, categorization, components and linguistic features.In Chapter 4, several barriers are illustrated in Chinese translation of English news from thelinguistic, cultural and stylistic perspectives and the applicability of Nida‘s functionalequivalence theory in Chinese translation of English news are expounded. In Chapter 5,some effective strategies are offered to achieve equivalence at the word, sentences, and textlevel in Chinese translation of English news from the perspective of FunctionalEquivalence theory. It is pointed out that the equivalence at the word level can be achievedby means of literal translation, free translation and literal translation plus explanation; theequivalence at the sentence level can be achieved by means of conversion of word class,amplicaton, omission, transference of voice, rearrangement of information units,highlighting rhetorical features, and using four-character Chinese phrases; the equivalenceat the text level can be achieved by means of adjustment of cohesive words and text. In thelast Chapter, the main idea of the thesis are summarized and suggestions for further studyare also proposed and it is concluded that with the guidance of the Functional Equivalencetheory, the Chinese translation of English news could be improved and be more accurate soas to make the English news more informative, more communicative and more helpful toChinese people's understanding of the world.
