摘要:The aim of this thesis is to investigate the ostensive-inferential nature of networknews headline communication and to analyze the process of the target reader’sinterpretation. On analyzing the English network news headline within the frameworkof Relevance Theory, the author gives some suggestions on how editors employdifferent language according to the target readers, which can make sure the success ofthe headline communication.

Conclusion


In view of the limitations stated above, it is certain that the present study makesno claim to completeness and leaves much space for improvement in future research.First, a contrastive study in English and Chinese network news headlines isuntouched. The contrastive study of relevance and presupposition can be studied as afurther project.Second, a deep and comprehensive investigation based on a large range of datadeserves further study. The research can take a variety of topics ranging from politics,education, sports, entertainment to business.Third, a particular comparative study can be made between different networknews headline sections to examine the possible discrepancy in the application ofpragmatic theories.It is hoped that this thesis can shed some light on the study of English newsheadlines from the perspective of pragmatics. Meanwhile, apart from news headlines,there are other types of titles for discourses. More or less, they have some features in common. Therefore, understanding the features of news headlines will help us tounderstand other types of titles, too.39
