If devoted more time and energyto do the research of more types of news reports, the results of the study will be more comprehensive.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Related Studies on Thematic Structure
The theme was first proposed by Vitem Mthesius, the founder of the Prague School, a Czechoslavaklinguist in 1939, who defined Theme as “the starting point of utterance which is known or at least obviousin the given situation and from which the speaker precedes.” In the process of communication, theme is thestarting point of the discourse. Generally speaking, it is given information. While rheme is the central partof the discourse, it is new and primary information. Vitem Mthesius declared that a clause should beanalyzed at two levels, one of which is the Formal Division, i.e. to segment a clause into subject, predicate,object and other elements according to grammar, the other is termed the Actual Division, which is used todivide a clause into Theme-Rheme from the functional point of view. In the 1960’s, M.A.K. Hallidayincorporated the Theme-Rheme approach together with other linguistic theories into his SystematicFunctional Grammar (Gou Yajun, 2003)According to Halliday, theme is “the element which serves as the point of departure of the message; itis that with which the clause is concerned” (Halliday 1994: 37). In a word, the theme is the center body of aclause. “The reminder of the message, the part in which the theme is developed, is called in Prague schoolterminology the rheme” (Halliday 1994: 37). Also another expression consistent with Halliday’s statementis that theme is “the idea that is represented by the constituent at the starting point of the clause” (Bloor1997:72). And the rest of the clause is the developed message, which is termed as rheme. So rheme isexpressed as “the rest of the message” (Bloor 1997: 72). That is to say, a clause is expressed as a theme issucceeded by a rheme.

2.2 Studies on Thematic Progression Patterns
As we all know, the Thematic Progression Patterns (TPP) is a typical structure within a clause,Halliday (2006: 54) points out “thematic organization appearing in different guise throughout the system oflanguage, with manifestations both above the clause and below it”.
