Finally,detailed explanations are followed. Secondly, in analyzing personal pronouns, this thesischaracterizes respectively the several application of the first, second and third personpronouns. In addition, by analyzing quantitatively the frequencies of three kinds ofpersonal pronouns, the characteristics of personal pronouns to realize interpersonalmeaning are studied. In a word, this thesis obtains a comprehensive understanding ofinterpersonal meaning in the addresses through a combination of qualitative andquantitative approach..

Political speech is an important form of public speech. It is a speechwhich manifests position, clarifies ideas and publicizes claims on internal affairs athome and diplomatic relationship. As globalization is expanding, people pay moreattention to political speech. The language of politics can not only present the speakingskills of politicians but also manifest the reinforcement of policies and political attitudeson the addressees.In the wide range of public political speech, presidential inaugural speech is thecase in the point. The inaugural speech is a sub-component of public speech. Thepurpose and effect of political speech is to influence the audience, draw the distancebetween the speaker and the audience, announce policy and obtain support.Interpersonal function in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar is useful andpractical to probe into the interpersonal meanings of political speeches. So this studyaims to find out what kind of linguistic elements establish the interpersonal meaning ofthe language, what ways the speaker applies to build up and keep the interpersonalrelationship with the hearers, and what effect and purpose interpersonal meaningrealized in the inauguration speech achieve. Besides, it tells us that choosing properlypersonal pronouns is helpful for the speaker to perform an attractive and successfulspeech.The work has the significances as follows: (1) it is a tentative study of inauguraladdress by putting modality and personal pronoun theory into practice; (2) through aspecific politician’s address, it can help to appreciate the presidential inaugural speechesbetter; (3) it does good to promote the language skills of political speech learners; (4) itcasts light on English reading and writing; (5) it may develop the study of politicalspeech and make it more deeply.
