摘要:英语阅读能力是衡量英语学习者理解能力的重要因素,也是促进其他语言技能的基础。英语教师十分重视英语阅读能力的培养。

Cooperative learning has been widely used in many subjects and the manyresearches are conducted in primary and secondary schools.This thesis is a trial research on how to use CL to assist college students’ Englishreading in order to help teachers accomplish teaching tasks efficiently, and explore inwhat ways cooperative learning can improve students reading proficiency, arouse theirmotivation, and cultivate their social skills in more harmonious, relaxed and effectivesituations. Moreover, the author will further discuss whether implementation of CLcan have similar effect on students of different levels in experimental class. Thisthesis features the cooperative learning and task-based techniques in the reading stagehoping to build a more communicative and effective model in English teaching. Thisthesis is carried out for the purpose of verifying following three hypotheses:1: Students of different levels in experiment class benefit much from cooperativelearning.2: CL motivates students to read.3: Cooperative learning improves students’ social skills.Cooperative learning has been shown to encourage most of the affective factorswhich correlate to positively with language learning. (Grandall, J., 1999) Cooperativelearning was introduced to China in the late 1980s. Large amounts of researches incooperative learning emphasis on the application in different subjects in elementaryschools, secondary schools and senior high schools. The research of application ofcooperative learning to English reading in college is limited. Even though cooperativelearning has a good reputation in application, we should focus on college level tomake a deeper understanding of its effects. The author tries to combine thecooperative learning with English reading in college and make full use of cooperativelearning method in order to explore the benefits that CL can bring to students. Thisthesis would deepen and enrich the cooperative learning theory. In addition, theresearcher also hopes this paper will be used as an illustration to help more Englishteachers who are still in hesitancy in teaching English. Some easily adoptedcooperative activities are provided for other English teachers to refer to in teachingreading.

 

1.3 Organization of the thesis研究结构
The thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter serves as an introductionwhich offers brief description on the background and purpose of the whole thesis. Thesecond chapter gives literature review that offers theoretical support for the study.Chapter three provides brief introduction of research design, which present researchhypotheses, experimental subjects, instruments and procedures of the experiment.Chapter four reports the detailed procedures in teaching English reading. Chapter fiveoffers the data analysis and results which verifies the feasibility of cooperativelearning in English reading teaching in college. The last chapter is a conclusion to thewhole study and gives major findings and suggestions for further study.
