1.1 The Importance of Reading

As one of the mostimportant information carrier, English has become the most widely used languagestretching into every field of human life. And reading is becoming an essential means tolearn English and to acquire knowledge and information needed. “Reading is veryimportant to everyone in a literate society,and being literate has become the designfeatures of an educated person" (Nunan, 2001,p.249).According to Carrell, reading is regarded as universally one of the four mostimportant skills (the others being listening,speaking, and writing),for many students,particularly in English as a second or foreign language learning and the main reason forwhich students leam the language. Eskey also considered that the ability to read was asimportant as oral skills,if not more important. Thus, reading teaching is an inseparablecomponent of English teaching in junior high schools. The newly published Junior EnglishCurriculum Standard (2001) explicitly points out that the aim for Junior Grade III studentson reading instruction is,first of all, to train students to read more efficiently, to foster thestudents' good reading habits and to cultivate their strong interest in English learning.


1.2 Current Situation of Reading Teaching in Junior High Schools
From the above mentioned we know that how to improve the efficiency of readingcomprehension and how to get best reading effect have become keen research topics forlanguage teachers and experts. However, the current situation of reading teaching existingin Chinese junior high schools is not optimistic because there are some insurmountableproblems: some teachers are still employing traditional methods, which always focus onteaching and learning vocabulary, grammar, language points, sentence structure,even thetranslation of the whole text. Teachers usually ask learners to prepare lessons before classthrough looking up new words, pronunciation, translation, synonym, and so on.(Goodman.K.S. 1967; 67). There are other teachers, who seem to use some so-called advanced teaching methods,such as the use of multimedia, hierarchical teaching and theuse of advanced teaching concepts, but most of these activities are superficial. Students'unsuccessful comprehension may be thought to the lack of specific language proficiencyby most teachers in junior high schools ---perhaps a word was not in' Jhc student'svocabulary,a rule of grammar was misapplied, and an anaphoric cohesive tie wasimproperly coordinated, and so on. As a result, most of students in junior high schools feeldifficult in correctly comprehending a passage, particularly a passage concerning aboutsuch areas unfamiliar to them as technology, science,biology, and history,even they doknow the meaning of every word they still cannot make sense of the whole passage.
