摘要:The purpose and significance of this research can be summarized as the following: It is to investigate the influence of item types on Chinese senior students’ reading testperformance, and the relations between item types and test scores.

ople should pay attention that the study of reading in westerntheory is to learn English as a native language or second language (SL). While forChinese students, especially high school and junior middle school students, the readingpurpose is very different from western students. In China, English is as a foreignlanguage to learn. So for Chinese high school students, English is as a foreign language(FL) to study. In addition to gain pleasure, obtaining information, reading is languagelearning means of training the ability of listening, speaking, reading, writing and thesystematic way of language learning. In 1996, Gao Lansheng categorized reading purposes into application reading and learning reading in his book English ReadingTheory. The former purpose makes English as a tool to realize the readers’ purposes. Thelatter purpose means learning language through reading. The purpose of reading is toobtain language and characters. The reading purpose of high school students belongs tothe second category. However, with the development of economy and society,communications between China and the world are gradually strengthening. While livingon campus, high school students are eager to communicate and contact with the outsideworld, and hope to practice what they have learned in the classroom in real life, which isvery helpful for cultivating their interest in learning, so gradually, high school students’reading purpose should be to merge these two kinds of purposes, namely, mastering thelanguage itself and using it as a tool in real life.

2.2 Factors Affecting Reading Ability
Christine Nuttall (2002) explained the process of how information is transferredfrom the author’s mind to the reader’s mind in his book Teaching Reading Skills In AForeign Language. In such a encoding and decoding process, information is passed.There are three variables will influence this natural process, namely, the writer variables,the text variables and reader variables. Writer variables. Before writing if the author can for the reader to “know”, thenthe writer will write according to its characteristic. So, the author expects to conveyinformation accurately to the reader, otherwise there will be misunderstanding andpuzzling, resulting in inability of communication between the author and the reader.
