Culture is the wealth created by man, and different cultures bear respective creators’ national, geographic and time’s characteristics, which call for the communicationrelationship between various cultures. This communication cannot be separated from translation, because language is the most important carrier. Therefore, differences between various cultures and the necessary communication between them are the causes for the appearance of translation. A translator can’t master the languages if he does not know their inherent cultures. Translators need to constantly compare the two cultures. Only through the extensive, deep, systematic and specific comparisons, the common nature of human culture and the different properties of various cultures become clear. Thus, the implication embraced in culture can be completely and correctly conveyed. So some scholars hold the view that “whether the translation is easy or difficult, good or bad is more related to culture than to language” (Tan Zaixi 126 https://www.51lunwen.org/AmericaThesis/ ). Wang Zuoliang said, the difference between two cultures is the most difficult thing in translation, so translators should have a good knowledge of both the foreign culture and the native culture (116).
The mere understanding of the source text is far from being enough in the process of translation. The lack of cultural awareness on the part of the translator is the cause of errors or defects of cultural nature in translating (Luo Jinde 55). Language is a part of culture and is influenced and restricted by culture. The same word used in different cultural background may well mean differently, and also different words may well mean the same. Consequently, during the course of translation, whether the translator gets the correct meaning of the source text is to a great extent determined by his knowledge of the cultures of the languages he is handling. For a truly successful translation, bicultural ability is much more important than bilingual ability (Nida 70).
