      Definition of Advertisement 
      Since the advent of the first advertisement in the world, advertising has been penetrating every sphere of our society. People began to realize that no product can survive in a competitive market without advertising itself or being used by companies as a vehicle to promote itself.

      The word "advertise" stems from the Latin word "advertere", which means "make known to the public". Normally, advertisement can be recognized as paid, non-personal communication forms used with persuasive intent by identified sources through various media. (Scandage edal, 1983) Advertisement is a form of communication intended to persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to purchase or take some action upon products, ideas or services. It includes the name of a product or service and how that product or service could benefit the consumer, to persuade a target market to purchase or to consume that particular brand. These messages are usually paid for by sponsors and viewed via various media.( Wikipedia)

      Advertisement is one of the most important cultural factors molding and reflecting our life today, and it is also an inevitable and ubiquitous part of everyone's life.  Naturally, advertising language has become an important means of communication. As to the importance and specialties of advertisement, it is necessary to make a brief introduction of advertisement from the perspective of definition, classification and function.
 
     Language Characteristics of English Advertisement


       Commercial advertisement belongs to the very practical types of economic value. The ultimate purpose of advertising is to promote writing with high sales. Therefore, advertising language must have its appeal to the target customers, and in many instances, it must cater for a largely indifferent and uncooperative customers. Advertisement language as a special kind of language is very different from common language. Simple, attractive and persuasive are general features of English advertisement. In advertising, it will get better effect to use simple sentences than compound sentences, because the readers will get bored on reading complex sentences. Another reason is to reduce the cost of advertising, and effectively stimulate the consumers. According to statistics, in every 30 sentences there is one interrogative sentence, because interrogative sentences are quick and effective to arouse readers' response. Most English advertisements are attractive and eye-catching. And the ultimate purpose of advertising is to persuade consumers to buy its products.
