Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research
In recent years, the international communication in the academic communities hasbecome more and more frequent. English, as "the world's predominant language ofresearch and scholarship" (Swales, 1990:99), has been playing an ever-increasinglyimportant role in academic writing. The academic authors from various fields cannotbut resort to English to get international recognition. And scholars from differentcountries have to plunge into the academic books and journals in English to gainbasic information. So there is a growing demand of non-native English speakers(NNES) for instructions in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), which haspromoted studies to gain a deeper understanding of the social contexts of the use ofacademic texts and the strategic linguistic choices that characterize these texts.According to a research done by Bi (2002), the number of Chinese Englishperiodicals is more than 186，but only 36 periodicals are indexed by Science CitationIndex (SCI) and Engineering Index (EI), journals of international levels and most ofEnglish edition Chinese science and technology periodicals are not core in the world.Therefore, for Chinese scholars, it is quite necessary to improve their Englishacademic writing proficiency and increase the possibility of publishing their papersin international periodicals.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
Though there are some contrastive studies on first person pronouns in RAs indifferent fields，yet rare researches of contrastive study on first person pronouns insocial science papers of Chinese and native English authors have been done. And inview of contrastive studies of first person pronouns, many researchers (Harwood,2005a; Luzo,n，2009) only investigate one part of first person pronouns (mostly I andwe) or just first person pronouns in one part of academic articles, such as in abstract or introduction (Yakhontova, 2006). Few researches have done an overall study offirst person pronouns in RAs.In view of the inadequate studies done on the contrastive analysis of the use offirst person pronouns in RAs by native English and Chinese authors, this thesisattempts to examine whether there exist similarities and differences between the useof first person pronouns in English social science papers by Chinese and NESauthors，and if the answer is yes，the thesis will aim at exploring the reasons,illustrating the discourse flmctions of exclusive first person pronouns, and thengiving certain insights into the academic writing for Chinese authors. The corpusadopted in this thesis is a self-built one which focuses on the field of social science.

2.1 Definition and Classification of Deixis
Deixis is considered to be "the most obvious and direct linguistic reflection of therelationship between language and context" (Levinson，1983:54). It relates the use oflanguage with respect to a particular time，place and person. The words which refer tothe information of language pointing were called deixis.
