Chapter Two: Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
This thesis will be mainly on the basis of the lexicographical theories of The OxfordGuide to Practical Lexicography (B. T. Sue Atkins, Michael Rundell 2008) as well as theResearch on the Design Features of Advanced Learner's English Dictionary (Tian Bing,Chen Guohua 2009). The definitions of key terms of this thesis will be based on these twobooks. The former is mainly about the standards and functions of examples of generaldictionaries while the latter specially offers the functions as well as the guidelines forexample selection of advanced learner's English dictionary. Meanwhile, the author willalso discuss the advantages and disadvantages of five relative papers respectively titledThe Language of Examples in English Learner's Dictionarie^^^^ Setting a goodexample- What kind of examples best serve the users of learners ‘ dictionaries'P^^, ASurvey and Comment of the Studies Concerning the Cultural Function of IllustrativeExampleP^^, Functional Levels of Examples in English-Chinese Dictionarie andDecoding and Encoding Functions of Examples in English Learners,Dictionaries: A CaseStudy of Exemplification of the Word 'monopolyP^^ In discussion of these four papers,the author will not only try to leam their perspectives of research and methodologies butalso make comments on the shortcomings of them for the reference of this thesis.

2.2 Reviews of lexicographical tiieories on examples
This section has a review of OGPL's and RDFALED's lexicographical theories ondictionary examples, trying to generate a theoretical model for the analysis of thisresearch on the effectiveness of CCALED's examples. OGPL is a book about 'the introduction to the job of creating a dictionary.' (B. T. SueAtkins, Michael Rundell 2008: 1) It is a guiding book on the general rules for writingdictionaries. And the guidelines on the example mentioned here apply to the generalsituations. So it also applies to the examples of learner's dictionaries like CCALED.According to the process of dictionary making, the book contains three parts; Part OnePre-lexicography, Part Two Analyzing the data, and Part Three Compiling the entry. Thisthesis will try to analyze the examples in CCALED by following the theories andguidelines in 'Example' column in these three parts.As the OGPL states in 7.2.7.2 Example of Part One, the example component mayhold two types of illustrative sentences or phrases: one simply illustrates facts alreadygiven elsewhere in the entry and the other adds information to the entry, either by tellingthe user something that cannot be coded into grammar components, or - in the case ofbilingual dictionaries- by giving a translation for the headword in a particular context. Asfor CCALED, most of its examples belong to the former. That is to illustrate the factsalready given in the definition. CCALED adopts full-sentence definition which gives usermost information of the entry, grammar information included. So examples of CCALEDare mainly for illustration.
