2 Literature Review

2.1 Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC)
Scholars at home and abroad have studied intercultural communication competencefor more than half a century. Therefore, an increasing number of its definitions, dimensionsand development are still thriving. There have been a lot of debates among scholars about the definition of ICC, but withno agreement on its definition. There are various ways to constitute interculturalcommunication competence. The conception of ICC depended on the theoretical orientationand the concrete sample of the researchers before the subject established. Therefore,intercultural communication competence can also be called cross-cultural adjustment, cross-cultural adaptation, intercultural understanding, overseas success, personal growth/adjustment, cross-cultural effectiveness and satisfaction with overseas experience etc.（Guthrie & Zektick, 1976; Harris, 1975; Ruben & Kealey, 1979）. In today’s “globalvillage”, living both at home and abroad is necessary. Differences such as values, attitudes,cultures, ethnicities, social practices, political beliefs and religions distinctly direct people allaround the world who embark different meanings to their surroundings according to theirindividual attitudes that must be fully respected and integrated into life (Ife & Tesoriero,2006). During the recent three decades, many scholars have completed a large number ofstudies about those differences, and as one unique and important aspect of those studies, thatterm is conceptualized into “intercultural communication competence”.

2.2 Intercultural Sensitivity
The history of intercultural sensitivity is short but its researches are fruitful. Theearliest definition is proposed by Bronfenbrener, Harding and Gallway (1958), who indicatethat sensitivity can be divided into two aspects: sensitivity to the generalized other andsensitivity to individual difference. Sensitivity is defined by McClelland (1958) as one’sability to be sensitive enough to social standards. Hart and Burks (1972) later explore thedefinition of sensitivity and they hold sensitivity refers to a mind-set applied in one’severyday life whereby one accepts personal complexity, avoids communication inflexibility,interacts consciously, appreciates the idea exchanged, and tolerates intentional searching.The previous studies focus on the sensitivity, but the concept of interculturalsensitivity is not studied. According to Bhawuk and Brislin (1992), intercultural sensitivityplays a crucial role while people interact with others from various cultures other than one’sown. They propose that “to be effective in another culture, people must be interested in othercultures, be sensitive enough to notice cultural differences, and then also be willing to modifytheir behavior as an indication of respect for the people of other cultures.” According to them,intercultural sensitivity is a set of qualities that people must have so as to be effective ininteractants with other people.
