1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
With the rapid development of economy and technology, the world we are living in hasbecome much smaller, like a “Global Village”, a term which is proposed by MarshallMcLuhan in the 1960s. Globalization and internationalization make it inevitable that peopleof diverse cultures communicate with each other more frequently than in the past, and moreand more people go abroad for business, technology, tourism or exchanges of knowledge andculture. Besides, globalization influences the way we identify the world and every aspect ofhuman life by breaking down the stereotypical roles we played in the past. This trend hasdemanded people to cultivate and improve intercultural communication competence in orderto have a better and more wonderful life in the changing time. Therefore, interculturalcommunication competence is an essential ability for people who want to communicate withpeople from different cultures appropriately and efficiently.Currently, it is known to us that intercultural communication competence plays animportant role in foreign language teaching and learning. However, the current situation isunsatisfied. Gao Yongcheng (2006) indicates that the students focus on the examination ratherthan enhancing their intercultural communication competence. Hence, it is urgent to makestudents realize the importance of intercultural communication competence (ICC) and helpthem improve their entire ICC competence.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
Among the existing researches on ICC and ICS, we can find that many researchershave studied them from different angles in order to investigate the status quo of people’s ICCand ICS and try to find a way to improve the ICC and enhance intercultural communicationskills in China, such as the ICS of Chinese postgraduates at home and abroad, the ICS ofEnglish major students and non-English major students at university, the status quo of collegestudents majoring in English and college English teachers’ ICS. This paper focuses onEnglish major students. As college students majoring in English, they can have more chanceto contact and communicate with people from various cultural backgrounds. On the one hand,most of them may go abroad for business or work for transnational corporations after theygraduate from college. Therefore, their ICS will influence their ability to work with foreigners.On the other hand, a great many of them will be educators associating with English, whichindicates they are responsible for cultivating and improving younger generation’s ICC andICS. Hence, it is necessary to study the status quo of Chinese students majoring in English. In China, university can be classified into three levels: key university, ordinary collegeand independent college. As English major students, different levels of university studentshave different levels of English, and then they have different levels of ICC and ICS. Therefore,a comparative study between different levels of English major students will be done by meansof Chen Guoming and Starosta’s Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS).
