ition, there are alsomany doctoral dissertations and journal articles studying rhetorical criticism. 2.2 Previous Researches on Ethos
Ethos, as a key concept in western rhetoric, has been treated by manyrhetoricians in history. For Plato, the noble mission of rhetoric is to produce order andproportion. He recognized the persuasive force of a moral person and held that only anorator with intrinsic virtue could hope to instruct others in moral values. Isocrates’sstanding of ethos can be seen from his conception of the orator-statesman, the man ofcharacter and practical wisdom. Most notably, Aristotle saw ethos as one of the threemeans of persuasion and recognized two kinds of ethical proof: invented and situated.According to him, rhetors can invent a character suitable to an occasion or use theirgood reputation in the community. Cicero, the greatest orator and rhetorical theorist ofRome, insisted that the presentation of favorable character and moral conduct is themost direct means of securing the audience’s good will. He thought highly of thewisdom of the speaker and the wide range of knowledge for molding a well-educatedperson. Also he attached importance to the speaker’s stylistic choices and manner ofdelivery which according to him, can be affected by his character. Quintilian’sdiscussion of ethos first appears in Institutio Oratoria in a discussion of thesignificance of moral education for young pupils who aspire to be orators.

Chapter FourAPPLICATION OF THE NEW ETHOS MODEL

In this chapter, the new model of ethos will be applied to rhetorical criticism. Totest its applicability and operability, two advertisements, two prefaces and twospeeches are selected. The selection of texts is by no means casual; instead, it is inaccordance with the principle of qualitative research and its method of purposivesampling, which aims at selecting research objects with maximum informationavailable for the research questions.
