and Research Methods
The author of this thesis intends to study modern Chinese prose translation from the perspective of Eugene A. Nida’s readers’ response theory. The author of this thesis has taken Xu Dishan’s masterpiece The Peanut as the source text and has selected three famous English versions of The Peanut as the target text. The three English versions of The Peanut selected here are respectively translated by Liu Shicong, Zhang Peiji and Yang Xianyi & Gladys Yang. In order to make this thesis richer and more persuasive, qualitative analysis is carried out in this thesis and methods of comparative analysis and summarization are adopted in evaluating the three different versions. In fact, the author of the thesis would like to answer the following research questions: (1) Whether it is feasible or not to apply the readers’ response theory to the prose translation? (2) How to compare and evaluate the translated texts in the lexical level, syntactic level and textual level from the perspective of readers’ response theory ? (3) In the process of modern Chinese prose translation, what translation strategies and methods can be applied to meet the requirements of the readers’ response theory?
