2.2 Previous Studies on Modern Chinese Prose Translation Abroad
Translators are concerned about literary translation all the time, but the majority of them have paid much attention to poetry and novel translation, only few of them are interested in prose translation. However, the distinctive features of prose that cannot be neglected, more and more studies of prose translation have been come to appear recently. Although few studies of modern Chinese prose translation has been found abroad, it can be seen that some foreign translators indeed made relevant efforts in this field. Hilaire Belloc, a prolific writer in England during the early twentieth century, published a book called On Translation (1931), in which he showed great interested in studying the prose translation. In this book, he proposed six rules including both skills and principles of the prose texts for the translators. Belloc emphasized both the syntax and content of the prose texts. In the process of translation, the translators have the right to change the syntactical structures of original texts in order to conform to the stylistic and idiomatic norms of the target language.
