Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Pronunciation Teaching in China
English pronunciation is the starting point of English teaching. Pronunciation is the first stage of teaching. (Fan Jianhua, 2002) Wang Chuming (2001) states that the foundation of pronunciation has to be solid in terms of the regular route of language learning. Pronunciation is the surface of language, the nature of language, and the base of language teaching. The success in this period of learning pronunciation is truly vital for future grammar learning, vocabulary memorising, listening developing, speaking improving and reading upbringing. (Zhang Fengtong, 1998) In this case, it is evident that learning English pronunciation is of great importance in our country. Although China has reached an agreement that pronunciation teaching reserves its significance, the issue of how to implement pronunciation teaching properly and effectively remains ambiguous. Chen and Hu (2006) conduct a survey which indicates that the poor pronunciation of the Chinese people has hindered our communication with people from English-speaking countries. As Morley (1991) states, pronunciation is an essential part in communication which needs to be taught systematically. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to take pronunciation teaching of English seriously. It needs various resources to help English teachers to improve the situation of pronunciation teaching and finally to eliminate its ambiguity. Therefore, the best studying subjects are English-speaking countries. We learn their ways of teaching English pronunciation to better our teaching. Good English pronunciation teaching requires the combination of theories and practice to reach a reasonable outcome. This paper focuses on the pronunciation teaching patterns in China and the UK with comparison between the two to analyse their individual advantages and disadvantages. This comparison provides Chinese teachers with basis of improving teaching as well as new discovery for English pronunciation teaching.
