erance that diverges from the first speaker’s intended meaning or intention in order to achieve special communicative goals or e ffects. This phenomenon is often referred to as deliberate misinterpretation or DMI for short. Although researchers haven’t come to an agreement of the concrete definition of DMI, the researchers who propose the concrete definition of DMI are professor He Ziran and Shen Zhiqi (He&Shen, 2004:163). For them, deliberate misinterpretation is a kind of pragmatic strategy. Concretely speaking, it is a phenomenon that in the verbal communication, language users are likely to use special context or the vague and uncertain expressions of the other communicator to distort the other communicator ’s intention in order to achieve a certain kind of communicative effect.

2.2 Previous Studies on DMI
Although DMI and misunderstanding are two different terms and phenomena in verbal communication, DMI hasn’t got enough attention at the beginning, and most studies of DMI have been found in the studies of misunderstanding or the ambiguity of meaning. The previous studies on DMI both in China and abroad will be reviewed in this chapter. In the previous studies abroad, the explorations of DMI have been the by -studies of misunderstanding. So, in this part, a brief review of all the effo rts that have been made to explore both DMI and misunderstanding abroad will be presented. Most foreign scholars have conducted their studies on DMI mainly from the perspective of pragmatics, and they have regarded DMI as communicative strategy in verbal communication. The representatives of these scholars are: Fisher (1987), Zajdman (1995), Weigand (1999), Dascal (1999) and Tzanne (2000).Fisher (1987) discusses people’s communicative actions and pragmatics of human relations when people are talking with each other in a face-to-face context in his book Interpersonal Communication: Pragmatics of Human Relationships. He has explored some relational strategies, and “misunderstanding strategy” is one of those strategies. “Misunderstanding strategy” is referred to as “deliberate non-understanding”, which is a special type of DMI. When interlocutors use this strategy, they usually know the meaning of each other, but one of them may pretend not to understand the meani ng of his/her interlocutor. By &nbs
