Besides, most of her domestic novels concentrate on the identity dilemmawhen people are trapped into anxiety, facing up the state of insecurity and uncertainty.As one of Smiley’s most famous novels, A Thousand Acres also focus on the pursuitof identity.Ginny is the crucial narrator in the novel. To Smiley, Ginny is depicted as awoman who is trapped into the identity dilemma but in pursuit of her gender identitybravely and endlessly. At first, Smiley describes her as an “object” to men includingher father and husband and a woman who is unconscious of herself and blindlydependent on her younger sister Rose. However, Ginny gradually gets a clearunderstanding of the reality and condition, in which she can not really hold her ownidentity afterwards. Thus, Ginny ends up the subordination to her father Larry andher husband’s fetter, getting rid of the dependence on her sister Rose. At last, shecasts off the image of obedient daughter, dependent sister and submissive wife,finding a new way to live and embracing her gender identity as a working woman.
