To begin with, this thesis generally introduces the motivation of the research, aims of theresearch and also the methodology of the research.Chapter Two gives a detailed introduction of fuzzy linguistic theory, including thedevelopment and the main ideas of fuzzy linguistic theory, including the definition of fuzzylinguistics and the characters such as indeterminacy, determinacy and variability. At the end ofthis chapter, the application of fuzzy linguistic theory is discussed which lays a foundation forthe following chapter that focuses on the fuzziness in poetry.Chapter Three classifies fuzziness in poetry into three groups: semantic fuzziness,phonological fuzziness and grammatical fuzziness, of which semantic fuzziness is the focus ofthis thesis.Chapter Four lays emphasis on fuzzy numerals, including the definition both of thenumerals and fuzzy numerals, and the causes of fuzzy numerals in Chinese language as well asin English language.Chapter Five illustrates the classification of fuzzy numerals in Li Po’s poems. Thenumerals of semantic fuzziness are divided into four groups: ten, hundred, thousand, tenthousand, and the decaploid; three, six, nine and the triple; embedded numerals between lines;adjacent numerals. Three functions of these numerals with semantic fuzziness are also discussedin detail.The following chapter explores the English translation principles of numerals withsemantic fuzziness in Li Po’s poems. After the four principles, translation methods are provided.The last chapter is the conclusion, indicating some limitations and suggestions for furtherresearch.

As a matterof fact, fuzziness is an inherent feature in all human natural languages, and plays an essentialrole both in communication and in literary works. Fuzziness can make language more attractive,and enforce artistic effect, especially in literary works. A great number of researches have beenconducted on the subject. This thesis makes a research on the “fuzzy set”, which was firstproposed by L. A. Zadeh and attempts to give a definition of fuzzy language. Besides, the mainfeatures of fuzziness in natural language are also explored in this thesis, namely, indeterminacy,determinacy and variability, of which indeterminacy is the most distinctive.The study of the translation of fuzzy language is, to a large extent, based on theachievements of semantics from the perspective of fuzzy linguistics. It is believed that fuzzinessis universal in all human languages. As a result, the appropriate translation strategies aresupposed to be applied on solving the translation problems. This thesis which takes thenumerals with semantic fuzziness in Li Po’s poems as examples, attempts to explore difficultiesin translating semantic fuzziness and probe into feasible ways of translation.In the light of fuzzy linguistics, this thesis classifies the numerals with semantic fuzzinessinto four groups, and “三(three), 九(nine), 百(hundred), 千(thousand), 万(ten thousand)” aretypical numerals with semantic fuzziness in Li Po’s poems.
