摘要:The primary purpose of this thesis is to make a tentative study of E-C idiomtranslation from the perspective of Relevance Theory in order to construct thetheoretical orientation and the practical strategies.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Purpose of the thesis
An idiom is a phrase or a sentence which can not infer the meaning by themeaning of the separate word. Idioms are the reflection of the human life andassociated with the cultural background, history, geography and religion belief.Idioms have the distinctive characteristics, such as, stability of the unit, duality of themeaning and the variety of the rhetoric. Idioms are cultural-loaded and widely used inthe human communication. It is the reflection of the human life, history and culture.By understanding the features of the English idioms, the translator can comprehendthe implicit meaning of the idioms easily. The appropriate translation of the idiomscan not only ease the communication between people from different countries, butalso remove the gap between different cultures. English and Chinese are bothabundant in idioms, the translation of the idioms influences the quality of thetranslation works and the daily communication between the two countries. Thesuccessful translation of the idioms also enriches the languages of English andChinese. These expressions have contributed to the enrichment of the language withtheir distinctive characteristics, conciseness, vividness and strong metaphoricalmeaning. The main difficulties in the translation of the English idioms are thedifferences in the linguistic features and cultural background between the twocountries. During the translation process, the translator has to obtain the optimalrelevance between the original writers and the target readers so as to deal with thecultural and linguistic differences between different languages.In order to deal with the problem, many scholars have been immersed in thetranslation of English idioms from the cultural perspective and functional equivalence.Considering the previous translation studies, some scholars applied different theoriesto idioms translation. Lawrence Venuti first put forward domestication andforeignization. Zhang Wei explains three different relationships between English andChinese idioms: corresponding, semi-corresponding and non-corresponding. However,few of the researches have observed it from the perspective of RelevanceTheory .Although these researches gave a lot of enlightenment on the translation ofthe English idioms, a systematic and overall account for the translation of idioms isstill needed.

1.2 Research Questions
In this thesis, three research questions are listed under Relevance Theory:1. What are the principles of the translation of the English idioms?2. What are the translation strategies that can be adopted from the perspective ofRelevance Theory?Through the research on the three questions, the author intends to construct atheoretical orientation and practical strategies for the translation of English idioms.

2.1 Definition of Idioms
