摘要:The primary purpose of this thesis is to make a tentative study of E-C idiomtranslation from the perspective of Relevance Theory in order to construct thetheoretical orientation and the practical strategies.

eanings of the separate words.According to these definitions, it is easy to conclude that idiom is a fixedstructure whose meaning does not make up of the meaning of the individual words.Let us use the expression“go all round the houses”for example. The speaker mayknow the meaning of each word of this idiom, but it is difficult to predict that thisidiom can be used with the meaning of “act or speak in a very complicated way”.The discussion of the definition of idiom by the scholars has been going on formany years. Makkai holds that the term idiom should be realized by units whichconsist of at least two words. The units are “any polylexonic lexeme that is madeup of more than one minimal term omorphotactic criteria”(Makkai,1972:122)Fernando studies idiom from functional approach, he defines idioms as indivisibleunits where components can not be varied or varied only within definable vincits unitsare not usually renewable (2001:14), L.P Smith defines idiom as indivisible unitswhose components can not be varied or varied only within definable limits and notusually recombinable(2001:14).

2.2 Features of English Idioms
Despite the change of the idioms, the features of the idiom are relatively stable. Asa special form of language, idioms are words which have stable structure , integrativemeaning and variety rhetoric. The structure of the English idioms is relatively stable. An idiom usually can notbe changed. Generally speaking, no component word can be excluded at will or bereplaced by any other synonymous word in the idiom. Any variation in the idiom willlead to absurdness and nonsense. Firstly, we can not alter any element arbitrarily. Forexample, there is an idiom like “bring into tone”, meaning “start being used”(开始实施). We can not change it into “bring in force”. The idiom “by mistake” means“accidentally, without intending to”. We can not add any article between by andmistake, that is we can not transform it into “by a mistake”. Secondly, we can notsubstitute idiom by synonymous words. For example , “watch your language” means“be careful about what you say in order not to upset or offend someone”(留神言辞)can not be change into “see your language” on “watch your saying”; “hide your headin the sand” means “refuse to deal with unpleasant realities”, the Chinese meaning is“回避问题”, can not be replaced by “hide your face in the sand” .
