4. The right way of English translation of ‘long’
 
The different language bears not only the history and culture, but also human thinking patterns. Therefore, translation is a kind of activity that to enhance the level of understanding and strengthening exchanges for the purpose. The translation theory of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance", which has occupied an important position in China for 100 years, was firstly presented and applied by Yan Fu. In the process of translation, the meaning of a literary object is an indispensable component of translation products. Lao Long, the famous Chinese translator, also agrees that translating, as one of the cross-cultural activities, is not only the change of languages, but also a mode shift in cultural information.
 
Dr. Eugene A. Nida, is one of the famous representatives of the western translation theory school of linguistics, believes that representing information of the source language is the most important in translation, which include semantics, literary style, images, scene and psychology experience, etc.【李文革，西方翻译流派研究【M】北京：中国社会科学出版社，2004】
 
Liu Miqing focuses the Cultural Fusion mainly on three sections. Of which, the third is ‘Cultural values and all kinds of cultural events revealed in the source language are similar or analogical or can mutually complementary to get a deeper understanding, instead of being contradicted or disregarded. Consequently, thwarting or frustrating the merits of the natural culture of the target language.’【刘宓庆，当代翻译理论【M】北京，中国对外翻译出版公司，1999】The cultural values, cultural connotations and activities of ‘long’ and its derivatives are great different from Western dragon.   Translating ‘long’ into dragon is easily lead to the West people’s misunderstanding of ‘long’; Translating dragon into ‘long’ may thwart the brilliance of China's ‘long’ culture easily.
 
It is therefore not difficult to see that translating ‘long’ into dragon is wrong no matter on the meaning or the information transfer. ‘Long’ and dragon is incompatible, the translation between ‘long’ and dragon is unacceptable, and makes misunderstanding.
 
4.1．One way of translating into ‘Long’
 
Based on the Hanyu Pinyin of ‘long’, some scholars favors translating ‘long’ into long. Long, in English, is a common word, which has a lot of meanings. When it is used as an adjective word, it means measuring a large mount in length distance or time. For example: a long line; a long road or a long time. What’s more, it is also used as a verb to express one’s anticipation. For example, long in ‘He longs to meet his parents quickly’ means waiting for something at all by one’s heart. Therefore, translating ‘long’ into long may cause the sense of Western people's confusion. Moreover, long pronounce/ l ɔ n g / in English that is close to the pronunciation of Chinese word lang. Long is not the transliteration on ‘long’. In this case, Chinese people ought to correct Western people’s pronunciation when they use the English word long to pronounce it. This translation will not only increase our communicating difficulties, but also raise Western people’s perplexity about ‘long’. For this reason, it’s not a good way to translate ‘long’ into long, whereas, use italics to distinct them is a marvelous way.
