Every Chinese treats ‘long’ as the auspicious sacred object. When talk about ‘long’, they must come up with Long boat festival, the ancient emperor，legend act. However, Western people cannot understand and even have misconception about Chinese ‘long’ culture, because of the wrong translation—dragon. Name is representative of a thing, so they may find it quite natural that ‘long’ and dragon are the same fierce animal. It’s no wonder they are unsensible when they know Chinese people symbolized themselves with dragon.
 
This misunderstanding is cost too much. In 2008, IOC abandoned long as one of the Olympic Games mascots caused by this irresponsible translation. Accordingly, Westerns think Chinese people are ugly, savage，and Chinese culture is preposterous. These prejudices have been in their mind for a long time. Every time we look up the word in the dictionary, all we will find are wrong answers. What could we say when we talk about ‘long’ with Western people if we use such translation? Therefore, Chinese people must correct it by themselves instead of depending on the help of Westerns.
 
The differences between two cultures are tremendous. There are three principles in translation study, they are: ‘faithfulness, expressiveness and elegancies’. Literality, free translation or transliterate should be used together.
 
According to these conditions, ‘long’ ought to be translated into loong instead of dragon. Chinese words are famous for pictographic characters, and loong, from its way to letter combination, it has the characteristics of ideograph. What’s more, its English pronunciation is familiar with Chinese pronunciation. So in this translation, loong reach faithfulness, expressiveness and elegancies.
 
What's happening right now in China, is that more and more scholars have recognized dragon is the improper translation of ‘long’ which need to be corrected. They put forward lots of suggestions about the English translations of ‘long’, though there are still some discrepancies. The translation of ‘long’ really has been paid more and more attention. Every time when type out word ‘long’ or dragon, we can always find some articles and reports about the interpretation of cultural differences between ‘long’ and dragon in greater detail. Knowing more different cultural knowledge is of vital importance to translate culture-loaded words. Therefore, to reduce this misunderstanding in the cross--culture communications, it is necessary to raise people's awareness of the differences and give a new translation to Chinese ‘long’.
