Chapter Two Simulated Interpreting Process
2.1 Pre-task Preparation
Misinterpreting or misperception by interpreters can happen during the interpreting, leading to an inaccurate understanding of the speech’s content (Zhang, 2003). This demonstrates the value of pre-task planning. Since individuals cannot be experts on every subject, the interpreter must research and obtain essential information to prepare for the upcoming interpreting task. Adequate preparation allows the interpreter to better understand the interpreting task, reduce time and effort spent on real listening and interpreting, boost confidence, and improve the quality of the target language interpreting.
2.1.1 Background Information
It is best to begin pre-task preparation for terminology mastery with pertinent scientific and technical information rather than just focusing on lexical or linguistic preparation. The medical terms are varied and numerous because the lecture summarized the methods of combining Chinese and Western medicine to combat the COVID-19. Interpreting TCM can be particularly challenging due to the inclusion of not only contemporary medical terms but also ancient Chinese medical terms and texts. As a result, interpreters must thoroughly prepare themselves before taking on this task.
2.2 Interpreting Process
The interpreting process is a crucial component of simulated interpreting practice and requires proper preparation beforehand. This process consists of two stages: the initial interpreting stage and the subsequent reinterpreting stage. By effectively completing these stages, the interpreter can successfully simulate interpreting practice.
The interpreter formed a practice group consisting of three participants to ensure that the simulated interpreting practice closely mimicked on-site interpreting. The group’s task was divided among its members, which is explained in more details below.
