Chapter 1 Task Description

1.1 Analysis of the Source Text

Before translation,it is vital to analyze and understand the source text.This is because,in the process of translation,understanding is the precondition and beginning of expression,and expression is the purpose and result of understanding(Xu,2000).

Wendy L.Ostroff is an applied developmental,cognitive psychologist and Professor inthe Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State University.Dr.Ostroff has beendesigning and teaching interdisciplinary courses on child development,learning,andeducation for the past 15 years,and she offers workshops on applying child developmentresearch for scientists and practitioners.

Empowering Young Children written by Wendy L.Ostroff,was published in 2022 andthere is no Chinese version available today.It consists of seven chapters,each establishing adistinct focus to enhance children’s abilities.The text involves the presentation of theoreticalknowledge,the language of the text is characterized by a more formal and rigorous wording;aclear logical and textual structure;and a large number of references and citations to relevantliterature and studies,which are objective and persuasive.In addition,although the use oflong sentences in the text is infrequent,it is difficult to grasp the logical relationship andsentence structure of long sentences to the extent that it affects the understanding of thecontent of the whole text.The book explores the theory behind different learning habits andhow they stimulate deep learning.How to manage time has always been a concern of teachersand parents.Thus,the translator chooses Chapter 5 as the source text.The main content ofthis section is to empower young children to take their time.In the following chapters,thetranslator will conduct an in-depth analysis under the guidance of functional equivalencetheory.

The significance of this translation practice is mainly reflected in the following threeaspects:

Firstly,the practice of translating foreign early child education texts is helpful forcivilized exchange and mutual learning.Each country and region has its own unique ideas,methods,and practices of early child education.By translating these texts,valuable insightsinto the innovations and experiences in the field of early child education from other countriesor regions can be gained.This facilitates a broader perspective and expands thinking,ultimately leading to improvements and enrichment of the domestic early child educationsystem.
