following: Why did you choose this site? Who maintains it? Is it easy to navigate and

use? What resources are available within this site? Then, choose two primary

documents/images provided on the chosen site and address the following: Is there any

historical context provided for the primary document you have chosen? Is the document

itself clearly cited as to its origin and current location (i.e., for example, is this personal

letter available in a collection of papers held by an archive or is it an article from the New

York Times)? If this is a text-based document, is it a transcript, the original, or both?

Having identified your chosen document/image, based on your reading of American in

the Gilded Age: From the Death of Lincoln to the Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and A

Fierce Discontent: The Rise and Fall of the Progressive Movement in America, 1870-

1920, how does this particular website and documents reflect the applicable historical

History Series, www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/. Students who choose this

assignment are required to watch the film and write a review following the guidelines

listed below. The 4-5 page paper, not including citations or separate bibliography page,

will require further analysis of the film and two primary documents from the film. The

film review should pay special attention to several components. Be sure and use plenty

of specific examples from the film to support your ideas and arguments. In addition, be

sure to summarize the historical context, as well as addressing the following questions in

your essay. What is the story being told in the film? Whose point of view does the

narrator take? Does it change through the film or not? What kind of evidence/primary

documents does the film use to make the story work? For example, interviews with

participants; photographs; letters or reports written at the time; historians or other

“talking heads”; artifacts of some sort? Maps? Songs? Whose memories are these? How

are music and sound effects used in the film? They may be used to heighten emotional

material, to cause the audience to feel sympathetic or unsympathetic to the material, to

put the viewer “in the frame of action;” Did you feel manipulated by the sound track or
