It is to be observed whether the targets are achieved or not. The ratings are to be given on the basis of the achieved targets. The limitations and the weaknesses of the employees are identified and the training needs could be understood. Then the exchange of the opinions of the employee and the employer takes place through mutual discussion among themselves and the training needs are identified in agreement of both the parties. Thus the employees are appraised and developmental programmes are planned in order to improve the quality of the employees.

In order to identify the training and developmental needs of the employees, some important factors are considered like the business objectives, performance quality measurement, critical activity identification and SWOT analysis of the situation. (Foot & Hook, 1999).

Training programmes are also arranged in this organisation for several other reasons like new staff training, internal promotions, change in technology, transfers introduction of new legislations etc. In case of the new staff and the staffs who are promoted to the next level, have to face many new challenges in the new responsibilities. These training programmes are planned in order to make these employees prepared to face new challenges and also to give them a path on the ways by which the issues can be resolved.

Thus in the above process, the staffs are selected for the training programmes. The next step is to understand the skills required in the new and additional responsibilities extended to him and third would be the process of assessment of the gap between the current skills and the required skills of the employees. Thus the training plan is developed and hence by following these above processes the training and developmental activities take place in the St-Patrick’s Nursing Home .

Torrington et al (2008) stated that the performance feedback and incentives are the basic factors for the promotion and the continuous development programmes for the employees in St-Patrick’s Nursing Home .

The performance feedback strategy is the most important criteria as it gives the idea about the consistency in the performance standards of the employee. The employee is made aware about the performance issues and the developmental programmes are discussed with him in order to make him motivated and correct the issues in performance. The performance feedback also helps in promotion of the employees and the potential leaders can be identified. Additional responsibilities are given to the employees also on the basis of their feedback on performance standards. Thus developmental programmes can also be planned for the employees who are promoted to the next level and skill enrichment programmes are devised.

The incentive strategy also motivates the employees to take the developmental programmes and this may also result in good rewards and benefits for the employees.
