New Peeping Prevention Technology to Control Viewing Angle
Properties of TFT-LCDs

Abstract
New peeping prevention technology to control the viewing angle properties of TFT-LCDs has been developed. This technology cane applied to all kinds of LCDs, especially to the ones for PCs, cellular phones, ATMs and so on. In this technology, an additionally panel in which the whole area is divided into two kinds of small visible domains of different LC alignment directions is used. The products, named VAC Filter TM or VACFTM, have been put on sale in2003 and have been applied to TOSHIBA TECRA M3 and so on.

1.Introduction
Nowadays, the main market for LCDs consists of small displays for cellular phones, medium size displays for notebook computers, monitors of desktop computers, public terminals such as automated teller machines (ATMs) and large displays for TVs. For all these applications, except for the TV application, there are many opportunities for use in public places where many people are present, for example, in airplanes, trains or cafes. Therefore, peeping protection is desirable for these LCDs. In particular, due tithe recent improvement in viewing angle properties, the need for peeping prevention has increased.
To meet this need, films to narrow the viewing angle properties folds have been commercialized. The films are already widely applied to LCDs. However, not only for cellular phones or PCs but also public information terminals such as ATM etc, it would be convenient to have a function to switch the viewing angle. So, for these applications, it is desirable to have switching properties capable of switching between the two states. In one state, many people can observe the displays with wide viewing angle and in the other state, peeping can be prevented.
The authors formulated a new concept concerning control of the viewing angle of LCDs and, based on that concept, commercialization of new products for application to LCDs began in October 2004.1)
This product is named Viewing Angle Control Filter, or VACFilterTR, VACFTR, for short.2)

2. New Peeping Prevention Technology to Control Viewing Angle Properties of TFTLCDs
2.1 Peeping prevention using viewing angle dependences of liquid crystal devices Unlike CRTs and PDPs, all kinds of commercialized LCDs radiate polarized light through polarizer’s. The authors thought that the LCDappearance could be controlled by a combination of the polarized light and an additional liquid crystal device.
Moreover, concerning kinds of information, like text and numbers which are mainly desired to be protected, if the information is divided into two kinds of areas and the information in one area is hidden, the complete information cannot be understood. So, the authors thought that if the display were properly divided into two kinds of areas and the information written in one area could not be recognized from the left or the right side, the information on the display could be protected from peeping. This can be achieved busing the two kinds of LC conformations shown in Fig. 1 formed busing the method described below.
