1.1 Research Background

Wilkins said, “Without grammar, very little can beconveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed” (Wilkins, 1972: 111).During the process of learning a foreign language, enlarging a learner’s vocabulary isone of the most fundamental aspects. Nevertheless, the vocabulary did not get enoughattention. For one thing, there are not many researches carried out concerning thisaspect of language learning and for another, most language teachers thought thatvocabulary could be left to take care of itself in language learning process (Nation,1990: 1).English is a foreign language which has a large amount of vocabulary. Without abig vocabulary, English sentences would have lost some of their practical significance.Without a big vocabulary, people will have trouble expressing themselves moreclearly. Without a big vocabulary, communication activities will be unable to becarried out effectively. The larger an English learner’s vocabulary is, the betterchances of mastering listening, speaking, reading and writing skills he will have.“How many words are there in English?” The most straightforward way to answerthis question is to look at the number of words in the largest dictionary. This usuallyupsets dictionary makers who work with words on a daily basis. They see thevocabulary of the language as a continually changing entity with new words and newuses of old words being added and old words falling into disuse. Although a languagemakes use of a large number of words, not all of these words are equally useful. Onemeasure of usefulness is word frequency, that is, how often the word occurs in normaluse of the language. Hence, for non-English-major students, the accumulation ofvocabulary must be a priority in the process of learning English. Universities in ourcountry are expanding enrollment for a good reason, but meanwhile it comes up witha side effect which we are concerned about. Due to various reasons, not all thestudents they enroll are qualified enough in English learning. All kinds of problemsemerge in the learning activities. For example, vocabulary couldn’t be efficientlymemorized without spelling rules or mechanical memorizing, etc. The wordmemorization is completely separated from the context. Students do not pay attentionto the reading of the texts, the meaning of terms and the usage of the words.
In recent years, more and more teachers have taken notice of the importance ofvocabulary teaching and they have begun to explore how to enable the students tomemorize English vocabulary in an efficient way.
