thesis is intended to investigate Chinese EFL learners’ actual use of verb-noun collocations of delexical verbs, aiming at finding out learners’ performance on this language issue by identifying the collocational errors made by learners and the gap between learners and native speakers. It also aims to examine how this type of collocation is represented in current learners’ dictionaries and provide some suggestions for improving the lexicographic treatment of delexical verb-noun collocations in ECLDs. To achieve the above objectives, this thesis attempts to answer the following questions: 1) What kinds of errors that Chinese EFL learners made in producing delexical verb-noun collocations in writings? What factors are those errors attributable to? 2) How are delexical verb-noun collocations represented in current ECLDs and ELDs? 3) What can dictionary compilers do to improve the representation of delexical verb-noun collocations in ECLDs in order to better meet the needs of Chinese learners?

For sentences containing such a verb, it is hard or impossible to answer the question “What is the particular semantic contribution of the verb to the sentence?” Gui Shichun (2007) includes that these verbs have very little lexical meaning, and L2 learners usually have no problem in understanding them, but are problematic in producing such collocations.

2.2 Verb-noun Collocations of Delexical Verbs in the Field of SLA
Delexical verbs have a rather wide and vague meaning and can collocate with a wide range of nouns. Their extensive use in language poses problems for second language learners.
