CHAPTER FIVE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE PRESENTATION OF DELEXICAL   VERB-NOUN COLLOCATIONS IN ECLDS 

5.1 The Multidimensional Definition Model

The  Meaning-driven  Multidimensional  Definition  Model  is  a  comprehensive  and cognitive theory for the definition of language items in learners’ dictionary. According to Zhang’s (2009) explanation of this model, all the information presented on the right of an entry in a dictionary, including the presentation schemas of grammatical patterns, are means of representing the headword’s meaning. In other words, all information presented in an entry should help reveal the entry word’s semantic information. The multidimensional  definition  model  is  form  of  different  modules,  including,  the morphological  meaning  module,  the  conceptual  meaning  module,  the  syntactic meaning module, the pragmatic meaning module and the semantic network module (Zhang Yihua 2007, 2009).        Specifically for the lexicographic practice of collocations in learners’ dictionaries, one particular part of the syntactic meaning module in the multidimensional definition model,  namely  the  collocational  relationship  module,  is  of  implicational  value.  It suggests  that  learners’  dictionaries  should  not  only  reveal  a  headword’s  semantic elements  comprehensively,  but  also  indicate  its  potential  usage  context  and conventional collocation relationship.  In such a module, the semantic, grammatical, componential, and functional restrictions of collocations are emphasized, and multiple methods for representing collocations in learners’ dictionaries, such as usage notes, collocation columns and representing within example sentences are suggested (Zhang Yihua 2009: 261).

CONCLUSION 

With  this  thesis  the  author  investigates  Chinese  EFL  learners’  performance  of delexical verb-noun collocations using the approaches of corpus-based EA and CIA. A comparison of the treatment of delexical verb-noun collocations in current ELDs and ECLDs  is  made  and  the  deficiencies  of  both  types  of  dictionaries  are  examined. Several suggestions for optimizing the treatment of delexical verb-noun collocations in  ECLDs  are  given  in  the  previous  chapter.  This  chapter  summarizes  the  major findings of the present research and draws the implications as well as the limitations of the study, and finally, gives suggestions for future studies. Chinese  EFL  learners  have  difficulties  in  producing  delexical  verb-noun collocations.
