Chapter One Literature Review
1.1An Overview of Nonverbal Communication
The field of nonverbal communication has a long history involving many cue modalities, including face, voice, body, touch, and interpersonal space. “Nonverbal communication involves different levels of analysis, including group, individual differences and many substantive themes” (Hall, Horgan & Murphy, 22). This research aims to explore the effects of nonverbal communication in English teaching in primary schools, and Wang Yuhuan is an expert who studies in the field of nonverbal communication. Therefore, this research employs Wang’s (2013) theory to define nonverbal communication.
1.1.1The Definition of Nonverbal Communication
According to Wang (2013), all intentional and unintentional stimuli between communicating parties, other than the spoken words, are considered to be nonverbal communication, it refers to factors other than linguistic factors in a certain communicative environment that have an informational value to the sender or recipient. These factors can be artificially generated or caused by environments. It can be said that nonverbal communication and verbal communication are interdependent and complementary in human communicative behaviors. Only by effectively combining the two can a complete communicative system be formed. There are many forms of nonverbal communication, domestic and foreign scholars have carried out detailed definition according to different standards. In general, nonverbal communication includes not only the gestures and movements of the body, but also expressions such as the pitch, interruption, loudness and accent of the words, and these nonverbal factors significantly influence the meanings of the words. In addition, from a broader perspective, the communicative information can be transmitted by people’s wears, furniture, vehicles, and even interior decorations, sounds, lighting, colors, etc. It also shows that nonverbal communication is an interdisciplinary and complex subject, and the scope involved is extremely wide.
