Abstract. Mass customization initiatives are usually concernedwith analysing and improving the flexibility of manufacturingoperations to support the modular build of complex products.
This paper is concerned with extending the concept of customizationto manufacturing activities upstream of the final productassembly process. A case study is described that prototypesthe use of an internet-enabled production information systemdesigned to assess the feasibility of driving a build-to-ordermethodology through three tiers of a high-volume, high-varietysupply chain. In addition, the characteristics that currentlysupport mass customization environments and define the
relationship between mass customization and supply-chainmanagement are reviewed and discussed.
