Dissertation TemplateThe chapter layout depends on the type of report.
The following chapters can be included in the main text:
A. Introduction
In the introduction you give your answer to the questions What, Why and How. What are you going to study, why you are doing that and how. That means that an introduction must include the following elements.
A situation outline of the surrounding context that the report relates to. This often includes matters that are self-evident to the author. The reader must be able to use the introduction to gain an image of the company, institution or department ‘where it all took place’. Indicate the objective of the study. Why has the report been written? (Why)
Indicate the problem definition. A problem definition can usually be formulated as a question. Sub-questions can also be used if necessary. (What)
You must give some brief information about the structure of the report, so that the reader knows what to expect. The subject must be defined. You must indicate what is and what is not described in the report. (How)
B. Elaboration of the problem definition
The problem definition is explained and further elaborated: The problem definition can be divided into sub-problems, for example.
C. Description of the method used
How did you set about the study (step by step)? How did you collect the information? Who helped to produce the report? How were the roles divided? What was your own contribution?
D. The study
This covers descriptions, interim results, etc.
The description must be logically structured and form a cohesive whole. This part will comprise several chapters. The chapter division that you use here depends on the type of study.
E. The results and conclusions
The conclusions and results must follow on logically from the previous chapters.
F. The recommendations
Future recommendations can be given on the basis of the results and conclusions. The author can give his personal viewpoint on that in this section.
The bibliography
You will need to use publications of other people when writing a report. Those could be previously published reports, books or trade literature. If you literally copy the text from a publication of someone else you must state the source in brackets immediately after the text in question. For example: (Diekman, Nieuwsblad van het Noorden).
The (alphabetical) list of consulted literature at the back of the report can be drawn up according to the following rules:
For a book: Author(s), title, edition, place, publisher, year of publication, pages or section.
For a magazine article: Author(s), date of publication, title of the article, name of the magazine, volu
