摘要:词汇对于一门语言的学习非常重要,它是人们进行听说读写活动的基础。对将英语作为外语来学习的中国学生来说,学习英语词汇尤其重要。一些调查和研究发现不管是在词汇量还是词汇深度方面,中国大学生的词汇能力远远低于要求的水平。

本文采用课堂录音分析与教师采访相结合的研究方法,分析大学英语教师词汇教学的理念以及他们在课堂词汇教学中的实际步骤。


Chapter 1 Introduction引言


1.1 Importance of vocabulary and vocabulary teaching词汇和词汇教学的重要性
课堂英语词汇教学多使用传统的教学方式。词汇教学理论和实践的新趋势和新发现并没有被应用在课堂教学中。理论研究与课堂实践的存在脱节现象。Vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and provides much ofthe basis for how well learners speak, listen, read, and write. However, there has longbeen a misunderstanding that vocabulary is about individual words, like ―go‖, ―put‖,―give‖. In fact, with the development of vocabulary teaching theory, this has changeda lot. Nunan (2003) suggests it is useful to see vocabulary as also including multiwordunits. https://www.51lunwen.org/yingyulunwengeshi/  Therefore, vocabulary here not only includes individual words but multiwordunits as well.In Western countries, for example, people consider the number of vocabulary oneknows and uses as a very important standard to judge his Education and cultivation. InAmerica, there is even a National Reading Panel supported by U.S. Secretary ofEducation, which has done a great many researches on the teaching and learning ofvocabulary so as to teach children to read. Therefore, vocabulary plays such a criticalrole in native speakers‘learning, let alone in foreign language learners‘learning.It is widely acknowledged that vocabulary is of the biggest concern of foreignlanguage learners (Zhang, 2006). In 1984, for instance, in the introduction to theirCambridge English Course, Swan and Walter wrote that ―vocabulary acquisition is thelargest and most important task facing the language learner‖ (Chen, 2009). Forforeign language learners, they are greatly in need of vocabulary in their languagelearning, ―since lexical items carry the basic information load of the meanings theywish to comprehend and express‖ (Read, 2004). Many students complain that it is thelimitation of vocabulary knowledge that hampers their whole performance inlanguage reading, writing, speaking and listening. This is true for nearly every foreignlanguage learners. According to a survey (Hu, 2008) conducted in a local college inChina, it was found that students‘ performance in English was far away fromsatisfaction and one of the key reasons is their lack of enough vocabulary. Thus asNation put it, ―giving attention to vocabulary is unavoidable.‖(Nation, 1990, p. 2)Students can learn vocabulary from both incidental learning and intentionalteaching. There has been controversy on the adoption of which way can benefitstudents the most (Nation, 1990; Schmitt, 2007, etc.). Many experts advocate thatstudents can learn more lexical items from incidental learning such as reading andlistening outside the classroom, watching movies and so on and they can memorizethose words quickly and efficiently. However, for most foreign language learners,their learning usually occurs in the classroom environment, hence intentional teachinghas become the major source of students‘ language input while incidental learningserves as an assistant and complementary tool, as Thornbury (2002, p. 48) states ―theteacher is a highly productive—though often undervalued—source of vocabularyinput.‖ Schmitt (2002, p. 3) also points out the status of explicit teaching by sayingthat ―… (It) is probably essential for the most frequent words of any L2, since theyare prerequisites for language use.‖ In fact, students in China depend more onteachers in the classroom than on themselves after class.
