Many renowned Chinese playwrightslike Hong Shen and Cao Yu produced their works such as Zhao Yanwang, the Sunrise,the Wilderness, by following the plots, artistic techniques of Eugene O’Neill’sEmperor Jones and Desire Under the Elms, etc. Eugene O’Neill’s plays were initiallyintroduced to China during the 1920s and at its peak of introduction and translationduring the 1930s and the 1980s, his works were very popular among Chinese readersand scrupulously studied by Chinese scholars and dramatists. https://www.51lunwen.org/zwwhlw/ Yet during the 1940sand the 1970s, his works were almost banned or scarcely translated into Chinese.Why such big difference? This thesis endeavors to explore the causes of thisphenomenon from the perspective of cultural manipulation which includes ideology,poetics and patronage.In Chapter Two, the definition of cultural manipulation and its three factors willbe elaborated and the interplay of these factors in particular works be explored.In Chapter Three, this paper explores Eugene O’Neill’s personal life.In Chapter Four, two peak period of introduction and translation of EugeneO’Neill and a long silent period in between were studied to understand why EugeneO’Neill’s plays became popular during the 1930s and then gradually went out of sightof Chinese readers and even completely disappeared during the 17-year period(1949-1966) and eventually regained great popularity again.Chapter Five compared the early translated versions and the modern versions ofone of Eugene O’Neill’s plays, Beyond the Horizon, to further explore the factors thatinfluence the introduction and translation of O’Neill’s dramas in a broader context.
